The 5 Branches of Wellness: Who We Serve & Why

We move through life swiftly, from one goal and one day to the next. We use built-up momentum and inherent resilience to keep going. We move forward, even if we sometimes slip backward.

We do this until suddenly, a colossal wave comes in out of nowhere. We get overtaken, whether it's by extreme exhaustion that weighs down our bones, family responsibilities that have amassed like weeks of undone laundry, bills that have multiplied our debt and anxiety, back pain that makes getting out of bed a task, or depression that makes the next day feel terribly far away.

This wave often feels like a surprise. But the truth is, we're usually unaware of all the signs before getting capsized, oblivious to the need to get ourselves to shore before we risk drowning. We often move through life swiftly, and it’s how we succeed. But it’s not noticing that becomes our downfall.

This is the absence of wellness.

It's the checking in. The registering of your internal temperature. The awareness of knowing when to take a break before you break. The mindset that prevents rather than reacts. And the chance to stay above water and know when to swim or float.

This absence of wellness can lead to burnout, heavy financial burdens, perpetual conflict at work and at home, exasperated health concerns, repetitive symptoms, and a decreased passion for life that we used to be so proud of. The lack of well-being is costly, for us as humans and for the companies employing humans.

But here’s the thing: the absence is avoidable.

Thankfully, many companies today are on a mission to provide access where there is absence. And we help them by building awareness through content that helps fill the gap.

At Nurtured Narratives, we write for the workplaces and women that empower their customers and communities to build healthy roots to stop them from being overtaken by life's swells. We do this across five branches of wellness.

What are the five branches of wellness?

There are many dimensions of wellness. A quick Google Search reveals numerous well-being models—ranging from five to ten or more elements. At Nurtured Narratives, we focus on five that, if taken care of at the root, allow people to thrive.

  • Employee wellness

  • Financial wellness

  • Mental wellness

  • Physical wellness

  • Feminine wellness

Why these? It’s where we see the most significant potential for growth. Save time by skipping to your focus area or make time to get familiar with them all. Choose based on your mental bandwidth and fascination.

Why employee wellness?

Ninety-two percent of employees want more consistent care at work from their employers. Why shouldn’t they, when the average person spends one-third of their life working? Without employee wellness, only two-thirds of our “whole selves” are cared for. It’s not enough.

Plus, the cost of not focusing on well-being is enormous, with burnout costing companies across the globe $322 billion in turnover and lost productivity. This could be because…

Or any other number of factors. There’s much be done at work, and we love working with brands that make that work easier. (It pays off, too, given that four out of five employees who work for companies that support well-being say they enjoy work and 85% say they plan to stay in their current roles.)

Why physical wellness?

Taking care of our physical health is critical, but it’s often intimidating and even scary in a society with little awareness, inequitable healthcare access, and excessive bills. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Right now, an estimated 133M Americans suffer from at least one chronic illness. Millions more suffer from undiagnosed conditions, with 25M Americans living with a rare condition that’s difficult to diagnose. Meanwhile…

  • 61% of people skip going to the doctor because scheduling an appointment is too much of a hassle

  • 42% of people skip going to the doctor because of cost concerns

  • Of those that go, 51% are too afraid to ask providers about their health condition or symptoms

Companies and their content have the potential to make healthcare access and information more equitable, accessible, and relatable. We tell the stories of workplaces and women on a mission to make that happen.

Why mental wellness?

We’re finally making headway on removing the stigma on mental health, creating rooms for new trends that can help normalize mental well-being like AI-driven burnout detection and meditation apps on the ready. All this innovation and acceptance couldn’t come soon enough. Because while one in every eight people live with a mental health condition, we also see rising rates of:

  • Loneliness (with 79% of GenZ experiences loneliness frequently)

  • Depression (280M people worldwide who are living with depression)

  • Burnout (half of all U.S. workers agree they have felt burned out from their job in the past two weeks)

  • Anxiety (31.1% of U.S. adults experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives)

  • Stress (over 25% of people can’t function most days because they are so stressed)

It’s a lot, and we love working with workplaces and women who help people take a mental load off.

Why financial wellness?

Let’s face it: talking about money is still awkward. People would rather watch a scary movie (30%), sit in two hours of traffic (28%), or speak in front of a large audience (27%) than check their bank account. We need to break the stigma so that people can get better educated and elevate their relationship with money because financial wellness affects nearly every part of our lives.

  • 68% report their financial situation distracts them from work

  • 65% of individuals report that debt stress impacts their physical health

  • 32% of those distracted by their finances at work admit that financial stress affects their relationships at home

  • And 75% of Americans don't think they can save enough to retire

But people want to do better—84% of GenZers and 79% of Millennials would likely leave their jobs for an employer that offered better financial benefits.

So we help workplaces and women empower people to do better financially, increasing their literacy and confidence about their accounts and their wallets.

Why feminine wellness?

All of the above affect women, but it also affects women differently. For example…

  • Women are 30.77% more likely than men to feel burned out at work

  • 5x more women than men live paycheck to paycheck without an emergency fund

  • Out-of-pocket healthcare costs for employed women in the US are $15B higher/year than for employed men

These gaps grow even wider when looking at Black, Latina, and LGBTQ women. And then there are the specific issues women face, from healthcare concerns being dismissed to bearing the brunt of childcare to abortion restrictions to infertility to miscarriage to period pain not being understood, the list goes on (and on and on).

For each of them, women also have to deal with being told they’re either being too much or not enough. It’s tough out there for women, so it’s a good thing that women are tough as hell. We support workplaces and entrepreneurs, making it easier for women to thrive by taking on the challenges only we—as women—understand.
